STRATHSPEY STEAM RAILWAY
The Strathspey Railway operates a steam hauled service between Aviemore and Broomhill via Boat of Garten, a distance of 10 miles. Broomhill is Glenbogle Station in BBC's "Monarch of the Glen" series. The Strathspey Railway aims to offer the visitor an experience of a Railway of the 1950 to 1960s period. Why not take a trip on the train to re-capture the nostalgia of this era? The Aviemore station is just across the road from the hotel.

The railway which operates from Spring to Autumn also runs specials during the season such as Thomas the Tank Engine and in December Santa Trains, Mince Pie Specials (including 1st and 2nd January) and Hogmanay Special.

Why not take lunch on the move! - wine and dine on the Highland steam line aboard The "Strathspey Clansman", within sight of some of the highest and most spectacular mountains in Scotland, you can enjoy the excellent cuisine and just let the world go by! In 2004 Dinner on the Diner is available each Wednesday from 2nd June until 8th September - advance booking is essential. Traditional family lunches are available every Sunday from 28th March and every Friday from 4th June For menus see steam menu. Prices for family lunches and dinners include train ticket. The catering and bar facilities are provided by the Cairngorm Hotel.

SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING
Aviemore is renowned as Scotland's top ski and boarding resort with a full range of facilities available for both sports.

With the new funicular railway, the only one of its kind in the UK, open on Cairngorm from December 2001, the ski area can now offer greater and faster uplift capacity resulting in less queuing time and more time spent on the pistes.

The new funicular railway can carry up to 1,200 passengers per hour in winter - double the former rate. The journey time between the Car Park and the Ptarmigan is impressively reduced with the 2 km. journey now being undertaken, in comfort and fully enclosed from the elements, in a fraction of the previous 25 minutes by chairlift.

New facilities at the Ptarmigan station, some 122 metres below the height of Cairngorm summit, will include an inter-active Mountain Experience exhibition, a retail area and a restaurant which will not only be the highest in the country but also will enjoy some of the most spectacular panoramic views of any restaurant anywhere.

All types of equipment and clothing may be bought or hired locally at various outlets. In addition there are ski and boarding schools offering expert tuition to all levels of expertise.

We recommend Speyside Sports who operate the Scottish Norwegian Ski School which is based across the road from the hotel at the Railway Station. Snowboards, tuition, uplift as well as warm clothing can all be found in one location. Packages can be put together to suit your needs and abilities.

An alternative to CairnGorm is the Lecht Ski Area just 45 minutes away by road. The Lecht operates 14 lifts and offers hire and tuition.
